Consistency is boring.
Jim Carroll cut his teeth as a raw-nerve poet and rock singer by
exploiting the inconsistencies of modern life. His best-known
writing is The Basketball Diaries, a sooty soliloquy about booze,
drugs and sex. He began writing the "diaries" in 1963, at age 13, in
the poor parts of Manhattan.
The Basketball Diaries became a favorite with the underground
literary community, and Columbia Pictures bought the film rights to
the book a few years ago as a vehicle for actor Anthony Michael Hall.
Carroll's best-known music is from the dark and intensely metered
album "Catholic Boy," which spawned the hit "People Who Died."
