Article: Fermilab's fate is on the line

Depending on decisions made in Washington, Fermilab either will become part of the world's leading physics lab in the 21st century or fade into obscurity.

It all depends on what Congress and the administration decide to do with the proposed $4.4 billion superconducting super collider.

The SSC would be a 53-mile underground ring in which streams of subatomic particles would rotate in opposite directions and collide. Its design is similar to Fermilab's.

Illinois, one of seven states in the running for the lab, has proposed building the SSC next to Fermilab.
