Everyone should be aware that the risk of having a heart attack is greatly increased if there is a high level of cholesterol in the blood. What is the desired level? The consensus among medical experts is that the ideal level is 200 milligrams or less. However, if your reading is in the low 200s, and your other risk factors, such as high blood pressure and stress, are not high, a level in the low 200s may be acceptable.

If your cholesterol level is in the upper 200s, you may be able to lower it by changing your diet. Most of us know by now that diets heavy in saturated fats - cream, butter, beef and a host of other things we like - should be changed.
