When Ronald Reagan in January joins his most recent predecessors
- Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter - as a former
president, he will become a beneficiary of the most munificent dole
created by the U.S. government.
Under the 1958 Former Presidents Act, Reagan, like his elite
peers, will receive a $99,500 annuity (the same amount that an
on-the-job Cabinet secretary earns), free office space "appropriately
furnished and equipped," money for staff salaries and benefits, phone
and mailing privileges, official travel expenses and around-the-clock
Secret Service protection for life. In contrast, when Harry S Truman
