LOS ANGELES "Non mea culpa," Sam Neill pleaded.
"I was in England while most of that was going on. I'd come
back to Australia now and again, and I was completely baffled as to
why the whole country was caught up in this thing."
The thing was the sensational trial of Lindy and Michael
Chamberlain. The baffling thing wasn't so much whether the young
mother did or did not murder her 3-month-old daughter while camping
near scenic Ayers Rock; most logical evidence supported Lindy's
claim that a wild dog, or dingo, killed the infant and carted her
corpse into the desert. The real puzzle was why a majority of
Australians whipped themselves into the irrational conviction that
