Illinois Republicans continued their inroads into city-based
legislative districts on the Southwest Side Tuesday, unseating Rep.
John T. O'Connell (D-Western Springs) and threatening Rep. Robert M.
Terzich (D-Chicago).
But House Democrats ousted a former ally, Rep. Samuel
Panayotovich, in the Southeast Side 35th District and survived strong
GOP challenges to a trio of Senate incumbents to emerge still firmly
in control of the General Assembly.
Unofficial results showed the Democrats headed toward the same
31-28 Senate edge they now enjoy and their current 67-51 House bulge
unlikely to change by more than a seat or two.
