The mystery Thursday night at the Park West went beyond the name
of the featured group, the Mysterious Voices of Bulgaria, formally
known as the Bulgarian State Radio and Television Female Vocal Choir.
Many in the SRO crowd, which included last-minute ticket buyers
who nearly swamped the box office, had been drawn by the 24-voice
choir's eerie, dissonant, almost-inhuman sound. The choir has been
an international phenomenon for some time, its music being played on
MTV as well as public radio stations.
Local modern dance choreographers have used it in their programs,
and the audience ranged from performance artists and classical music
mavens to rock 'n' roll and New Age fans.
