Ardis Krainik fishes a pen out of her handbag and scribbles on a
paper napkin for a second or two. She looks at her results and
says, "No, the government - that is, the federal government, the
state, and the city combined - gives us only 3 percent of the full
cost of the Lyric season."
Talking over lunch at the Tower Club in the Civic Opera
Building, Krainik, the general director of the Lyric Opera, is
talking about the business side of running an opera company. As
usual, she is under pressure. A singer who might fit into next
season's casting is flying in for an audition and the appointed hour
is getting close. Always she shoulders twin responsibilities, the
