Sports psychology is one of the newest and fastest-growing
fields.
Jim Loehr was one of its first practitioners. He had been
executive director of a community health facility in Colorado when a
track coach asked him to apply his knowledge of psychology to his
runners.
That involvement 12 years ago encouraged Loehr to enter the
field full-time. He founded the Center for Athletic Excellence,
where he dealt with athletes in a wide variety of sports.
Not all athletes had confidence in sports psychologists then.
Loehr recalls a professional football player coming to visit
him at the insistence of his team's management.
