Article: Bhutto named Pakistan's prime minister

ISLAMABAD Benazir Bhutto, who gave up the life of a jet-setting socialite to avenge her father's death, achieved her ultimate ambition Thursday when she was nominated as the Moslem world's first female prime minister.

Supporters set off fireworks and fired into the air in celebration as Pakistan's acting president, Ghulam Ishaq Khan, told the nation in a television address that Bhutto was their choice.

Bhutto, 35, mother of a 2-month-old son, will be sworn in today to head the first democratically elected government in Pakistan since her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was overthrown 11 years ago.
