ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, the first
woman elected to govern a Moslem nation, promised Friday to heal the
wounds left from 11 years of military rule and to seek better
relations with the United States, the Soviet Union and China.
"I think it's a great day for women, a great day for youth, a
great day for Islam and above all a great day for Pakistan," she said
after she was sworn in by acting President Ghulam Ishaq Khan.
Bhutto, 35, promised in a televised address to the nation to
permit a free press, repeal laws discriminating against women,
release political prisoners, lift the ban on student and labor unions
and strive for a self-reliant economy.
