The Weekend PicKup: Most fascinating behind-the-scenes mayoral
machination is the effort of top Republicans, realizing they have no
viable candidate, to urge their fellow GOPers to cross over to the
Democratic primary and vote for State's Attorney Rich Daley for
mayor. Their reasoning: That would assure Daley's winning the
primary and probably the election, and he then would be beholden to
Republicans for some voice in city government, which they haven't had
since 1931.
BUT THERE'S THE invariable "but" - if an unwelcome Eddie
Vrdolyak decides to jump into the race as a Republican candidate, the
GOP plan could collapse. Vrdolyak might take away enough votes from
Daley in the general ...
