Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) may have passed up a glittering
opportunity to become mayor of Chicago.
Burke, who declared his candidacy in mid-October, made a
surprisingly strong showing in the Chicago Sun-Times/ Channel 7 poll,
running in a virtual dead heat with Ald. Timothy C. Evans (4th), the
leading black contender.
But in his campaign kickoff, Burke's candor left doubts among
politicians and voters about how long he was planning to remain on
the field. Burke hinted strongly that he would fold his candidacy if
State's Atty. Richard M. Daley were to become a candidate.
If Burke had firmly declared that he was in the race to stay, it
is highly questionable whether Daley would now be ...
