Article: Burke will drop mayor bid, likely back Daley

Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th) has decided to withdraw as a Democratic mayoral candidate Monday, according to well-placed sources.

Burke, 44, who has said from the outset of his two-month mayoral bid that he might fold his campaign if a stronger candidate emerged, is likely to endorse Richard M. Daley soon, the sources said.

Since Daley made known his intentions to run last month, Burke's support has sharply dropped in public opinion polls. A private Democratic poll showed that Burke's support had fallen into single digits, sources said. The poll showed him running far behind Daley and Ald. Timothy C. Evans (4th) and locked in a tight contest with Mayor Sawyer for third place.
