The mother of a teenage daughter exists for two reasons. To be ignored and to be hated. Not really hated. Just hated enough to make the separating-out process a bit easier. The sort of God-my-mom-is-such-a-bitch sort of hate that, along with rhinestone earrings and a pair of Guess jeans, is prerequisite equipment for the basic adolescent mode. This kind of hate is pretty much a pro forma thing.
