Article: The twilight of Khomeini and Islamic Republic

The government of the United States predicted that Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the "ruling jurist" of Iran, would not outlive 1988. The New Year makes it clear that prediction was premature. But the ayatollah's multiple medical ills and advanced age suggest that his death is not far in the future.

It will have profound consequences for the people of Iran as well as for the United States. The Islamic Republic of Iran that has been created under his leadership has proven a disaster for Iran, for Iran's neighbors and for all those in the Third World who have been caught up by Khomeini's revolutionary rhetoric.
