Tania Maria didn't look like she was in a frolicsome mood on Tuesday, when she opened her six-night engagement at George's. In her somber black clothing and dark, winged sunglasses, the Brazilian singer looked more like a grim general of the avant garde than a freewheeling jazz artist.

Maria and the Tania Maria Band tore into "Made in New York" with intensity, bending and blending intricate rhythms until the complexity became dizzying. Then off came the sunglasses, out came Maria's brilliant smile and the Tania Maria Band began to preside over a joyful party.
