The odds are against Jeff McVey making the U.S. Ski Team.

After all, the Midwest is not a skiing hotbed and only Chicago's Jo Jo Weber in recent years had contended for a spot on the downhill squad.

But McVey, 20, is on the Alpine Training Team, two levels below a berth on the U.S. squad that competes on the World Cup circuit. He's proof that the Ski Chicagoland areas can produce outstanding skiers.

A football and tennis player at Lake Geneva (Wis.) High School, he took up skiing at Majestic when he was 5. "I really learned at Wilmot from my dad," McVey said. "What started as family fun on the weekends got more involved."
