AIDS and Its Metaphors is half of a good book. Its pages
contain some of the most insightful passages yet written about this
culture's interpretation of the AIDS epidemic. Yet, these moments of
excellence leave the reader yearning for a full analysis, and it's
not forthcoming.
Susan Sontag clearly has the intellectual wherewithal to mine
the rich vein of metaphor that has crystallized around this
frightening disease. What is amazing is that this disease has yet to
