SPRINGFIELD Lawyers for a nursing home patient Wednesday urged
the Illinois Supreme Court to allow the withdrawal of a feeding tube
that keeps the brain- damaged 81-year-old Chicagoan alive.
For Belle Greenspan, the wife of Sidney Greenspan, and other
family members, the request by Cook County Public Guardian Patrick T.
Murphy is a simple one: official recognition of her husband's
oft-stated wish not to be kept alive by artificial means.
"In the minds of the family, there's absolutely no doubt," Mrs.
Greenspan said, that her husband of 55 years would not wish to linger
in what doctors describe as a "persistent vegetative state," as the
