Article: Lendl rips Mecir for men's title

MELBOURNE, Australia Ivan Lendl claimed his first Australian Open title today, defeating Miloslav Mecir 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 and taking a big step toward regaining his world No. 1 ranking.

Lendl, whose play suffered last year because of a shoulder injury, dominated the match between the compatriots and became the first Czechoslovakian to win the Australian.

Lendl captured his first Gland Slam title since the 1987 U.S. Open. He has won seven Grand Slam titles, with Wimbledon the only major championship still not conquered. Lendl won $140,000, Mecir $70,000.

Lendl had said before the start of the championships he would rather be ranked seventh in the world and win the Australian and Wimbledon.
