Article: Effort to curb steroid abuse just beginning // Ignorance, vanity main culprits Series: THE STEROID MENACE (STANDARD)

The father of a high school wrestler swung his car into one of the diagonal parking spaces in front of Tom's Gym in west suburban Addison and waited in the car as his son went inside to try to buy anabolic steroids.

"The kid came in and asked for steroids so he could have a good wrestling season this year so he could get a scholarship for college," said Tom Meredith, owner of the gym and an opponent of steroid use.

"I thought it was kind of weird that his father brought him here and then waited in the car," Meredith recalled. "I asked him if his father knew why he was here and he said, `Yeah, but he thinks they're like vitamins. He doesn't think there's anything wrong with steroids.' "
