MIAMI BEACH The beach, 100 yards wide, is clean and uncrowded even
on a balmy 85-degree day. Food at restaurants is inexpensive and
tasty. Hotel rooms are reasonable. The crime rate is dropping.
Only a few years ago, the area of Miami Beach known locally as
South Beach was given up for dead, but a new generation of tourists
is finding plenty of reasons to visit it again.
What has fueled the revival of South Beach is its concentration
of Art Deco buildings - wild, zany, hilarious buildings. Buildings
with spirals. Buildings with bold neon signs. Buildings painted
peach and ocean blue and, most of all, hot pink. You will not find a
grander concentration of nervy, daring architecture ...
