Tiara envy is rampant. Our preoccupation with royalty rivals
that of our British cousins. America, land of the free, is obsessed
with Prince Charles, Princess Di, the entire fantasy of born-to-rule,
superior bluebloods. Why? Instead of insulting our intelligence,
it provides the ultimate soap opera: intrigue, incredible riches,
beauties, castles, jewels, titles, the privileged and the commoners.
No wonder the arrival this week of rich, handsome, eligible Prince
Lamoral de Ligne of Belgium, 29, has Chicagoans frothing at the mouth
with anticipation. "Lammy" works in London for the banking
Rothschilds and his beloved pet corgi is his only "live-in" we've
heard about.
