East German veteran Wolfgang Hoppe scored a comeback Sunday to
win the world two-man bobsled championship by 0.06 seconds over
Gustav Weder of Switzerland in Cortina, Italy.
Hoppe, 36, and brakeman Bogdan Musiol totaled 3:38.05 in four
runs down the 1,288-meter course.
Matt Roy of Lake Placid, N.Y., and Bryan Leturgez of Cedar Lake,
Ind., were the best American sled in the competition, 12th in
3:43.03. Bob Horvath of Youngstown, Ohio, and Willie Gault of Lake
Forest were 18th in 3:44.68.
SPEED SKATING: East Germany's Constanze Moser finished second in
both the 1,500- and 5,000-meter races to win the over-all title at
the world championship for ladies at the Olympic Oval in Lake ...
