We reached for our hankies when the balalaikas started
strumming "Lara's Theme" in "Dr. Zhivago." And some of us dream
about being folk dancers when we hear balalaika music at Chicago's
lively Russian restaurants.
A whole stage full of balalaika players - 82 to be exact - will
be performing Monday at the Auditorium Theatre, 50 E. Congress.
The Moscow-based Osipov Balalaika Orchestra is celebrating its
70th anniversary with a two-month U.S. tour, its first in 12 years.
Mezzo-soprano Galina Borisova and baritone Vladimir Malchenko of the
Bolshoi Opera are appearing with the orchestra, as well as singers
and dancers from the Babkina Folk Ensemble. Boston audiences heard
