John Justin Smith, a gifted and versatile Chicago newspaperman and writer, died Tuesday night at the Americana Healthcare Center, Libertyville.

Mr. Smith, who was 70, recently had suffered a series of strokes.

His colorful career spanned 46 years. He joined the Chicago Daily News in 1937 and remained on staff until its demise in 1978, except for a stint with Channel 2 from 1963 to 1967. Then he worked as Chicago Sun-Times travel editor from 1978 until his final newspaper retirement in 1983.

Mr. Smith, "J.J." to his friends, may have held more news positions during his career than any other Chicagoan: Library clerk, reporter, rewriteman, feature writer, assistant movie and music ...
