Article: `Poltergeist III' full of cheap thrills

Poltergeist III (1988; MGM/UA; 99 minutes; $89.95) This time around, Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) is living in a Chicago high-rise with her aunt (Nancy Allen) and uncle (Tom Skerritt) when the forces of evil return to claim her. By viewing her as a victim of the fragmented family, following the nuclear-family uplift of the first two films, writer-director Gary Sherman and co-writer Brian Taggert add an interesting new wrinkle. Feeling abandoned by her parents and rejected by her relatives, Carol Anne increasingly withdraws. But compared with the explosions and implosions the supernatural home wreckers visited on the first two films, the thrills this time are pretty cheap. Rated PG-13. ...
