Article: Hispanic vote favors Daley by 2-1 margin // Washington's old coalition crumbles

The "black-Hispanic" coalition forged by former Mayor Harold Washington broke up Tuesday as Hispanic voters provided Richard M. Daley with even greater support than they gave Washington two years ago.

Early returns in the major Hispanic wards show that Daley won by a 2-1 margin, compared to 52 percent of the vote won by Washington in the 1987 primary.

"I think what Hispanics are looking for now is a coalition of interests, not a coalition of color," said Juan Andrade, executive director of the Midwest/Northeast Voter Registration and Education Project.
