DOWNPATRICK, Northern Ireland It's one point on which all Irish,
Protestants as well as Catholics, are united: Patrick reigns as
patron saint over the Emerald Isle.
As familiar an Irish figure as Patrick may be, however, most
Americans don't realize that his mission work took place largely in
what is nowadays Northern Ireland.
Patrick criss-crossed most of Ireland with his message of
Christianity. But it is in the ancient and powerful Celtic kingdom
of Ulster - a name used synonymously with present-day Northern
Ireland - that the most significant sites associated with the saint
are to be found.
