Halcion, the prescription sleeping pill that induced some people taking it to commit murder and other violent crimes, is an extreme example of how good drugs can have serious side effects. These cases of violent crimes, committed while taking Halcion, occurred when the recommended dosage was exceeded.

Today's prescription drugs are more sophisticated chemically than ever. Although they are studied for years before being approved for prescription use, we do not know exactly how most of them work. In the case of Halcion, benefits of the drug have to be weighed against the risks of its side effects injuring the people for whom it has been prescribed.
