NEW ORLEANS Everyone should experience a taste of heaven. This was
mine.
I was lying under a tree on the grassy median that separates
one side of Napoleon Street from the other. Spring had just arrived
in New Orleans, bringing temperatures that were summery in comparison
with Chicago's. The scent of magnolia blossoms filled the clear
evening air. It was sometime after midnight, a time when time itself
begins to blur, though the very notion of time seems less important
in New Orleans than it does most other places.
Across the street, Tipitina's was packed past capacity, as it
always is when the Neville Brothers return to their hometown. The
