When House Republicans voted to elevate to the leadership Newt
Gingrich, the Guy Fawkes of the GOP, they pointedly rejected
President Bush's call for a new era of bipartisanship - and opted
instead for confrontation. The decision reflects independence,
spirit, self-confidence; finally, House Republicans have come to
realize that the only way out of permanent minority status is through
permanent political struggle. We are on the road back.
Speaker Jim Wright will be first to feel the new militancy, but
Bush, too, needs to read the cable traffic. What House Republicans
