Probably not. Richard M. Daley is not Richard J. Daley, and
latter-day Chicago is not the town the first Mayor Daley ran for 21
years as the last of the big city bosses.
But the son has much in common with the father.
Like his father, Richard M. Daley is a home-grown product of
Bridgeport and has maintained his roots there in the old ethnic
neighborhood. Like his father, who died in office in 1976, he is a
deeply religious family man who displays the kind of quiet
self-confidence that is often the result of a secure and loving
childhood. Like his father, he is a moderate social drinker and a
bit of a prude who doesn't care for off-color jokes. He has his
