Democrat Richard M. Daley, the heir to the most famous name in
Chicago politics, crushed two opponents in an electoral avalanche
Tuesday to win the mayor's office for the remainder of the late
Harold Washington's term.
Daley, 46, a popular three-term state's attorney and the eldest
son of former Mayor Richard J. Daley, will become the city's fifth
chief executive in a decade, and is the first white politician to
wrest control of a major American city from a black administration.
Bathed in spotlights, Daley and his wife, Maggie, entered the
Hyatt Regency Chicago's ballroom at 10:15 p.m. to claim victory
