Joyce Klein likes to claim that she began her massive cookbook
collection - 5,000 to be exact - in self-defense.
"I got enthused about cookbooks because people thought I was
English and therefore couldn't cook," she said in her telltale
accent.
"Actually, I love to cook. And I love to read cookbooks. I'll
just pick up a book and start reading, the same way some people read
fiction," said Klein, who sells mostly out-of-print cookbooks and
antiques in her shop in the Antique Center, 818 North Blvd., Oak
Park.
It started with Gourmet Magazine, which she began reading and
saving. Then a buyer at Marshall Field's called whenever a cookbook
on English food or desserts, her two interests, ...
