Mike Ditka and common sense say the Bears need defense in the
upcoming draft.
No doubt, young defensive players are needed to maintain and
refurbish a unit that has ranked no lower than second in the NFL in
five years. But the Bears probably won't be returning to the Super
Bowl unless their offense improves.
Ditka described his offense as "absolutely atrocious" against
the 49ers in the NFC championship game.
"We can't say to our defense, `Pitch a shutout, we'll win 3-0,'
" Ditka said. "That is just so much bull."
That's poetry to the ears of defensive tackle Dan Hampton.
"I'm concerned with the fact that the defense has carried this
