`Twist in My Sobriety," the recently released single from Tanita
Tikaram's "Ancient Heart" album, is causing a stir beyond the usual
interest in a talented newcomer.
Radio stations and Tikaram's record label, Reprise, are getting
calls about the exotic-sounding instrument used in the chorus. Does
that penetrating Oriental sound come from a synthesizer? Is it a new
kind of electronic hybrid?
It comes, in fact, from an oboe, a standard member of classical
music orchestras and chamber ensembles since the days of J. S. Bach.
Unlike the flute, clarinet, trumpet or many other classical
instruments, however, the oboe hasn't made the leap into popular
music.
