W W hile NBC won the 1988-89 prime-time television season by its
biggest margin ever, all three networks suffered huge losses in total
viewership.
Only 67.2 percent of all viewers watched NBC, ABC and CBS, which
represented a decline of more than 1.3 million households since last
year. The three networks' combined share was 70.7 percent in
1987-88.
Network officials attributed the drop to the 22-week strike by
the Writers Guild of America and to the continued erosion of viewers
by cable, independent stations and the new Fox network.
For the 30-week prime-time season, NBC averaged a 16.0 rating
and 26 share, according to A.C. Nielsen Co. figures. ABC had a 12.9
