Article: China calls in 10,000 troops, starts crackdown on students

BEIJING Chinese authorities began a crackdown on dissident students Wednesday, clearing Tiananmen Square of pro-democracy banners, firing the editor of a liberal newspaper and vowing to disperse any "illegal demonstrations."

A possible confrontation between students and police loomed this morning as the students prepared to march to the square and authorities mobilized to block them.

Chinese sources say at least 10,000 anti-riot soldiers have been brought into Beijing in anticipation of trouble.
