Poppy seed, a little black accent to bagels or bread, has a
subtle, anise- and nut-like flavor and a chewy texture. Although
most people think of it as a decorative touch, it can be a wonderful
seasoning as well. Whole poppy seeds are available in jars in
supermarket spice sections. Ground, sweetened poppy seeds are sold
in the bakery sections. Middle European and Middle Eastern stores
sell poppy seeds in bulk.
To bring out the full taste, toast poppy seeds in a dry skillet,
stirring constantly, then add to whatever you're cooking.
Here is a great recipe for poppy-seed bread requested in Swap
Shop. The credit goes to my friend Pat Kane.
