BALTIMORE When the sun finally broke through the other afternoon
after 13 straight days of rain, Shug McGaughey had to believe his
luck finally was changing for the better.
At last, Swimlico would go back to being just plain old Pimlico,
and with local weathermen predicting there would be no more
precipitation before tomorrow's 114th running of the Preakness, the
track promised to be fast and dry.
Those words are the exacta McGaughey wanted to hear.
Ever since his most celebrated trainee, Easy Goer, finished a
disappointing second to Sunday Silence in the mud at the Kentucky
Derby two weeks ago, McGaughey has answered the same question
