Buena Park, tucked into the southeast corner of Uptown, is known
for its historic courtyard buildings and nearness to Lincoln Park and
Waveland Golf Course.
The neighborhood, bounded by Graceland Cemetery, Irving Park
Road, Marine Drive and Montrose Avenue, began attracting developer
attention in 1984 when it was designated as a landmark district and
listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
During the housing shortage after World War II, Buena Park
declined into a wasteland of shabby commercial strips dotted with
transient hotels and brawling bars. Only a few years before
landmarking, drug dealers, gangs and prostitutes roamed the streets.
