BEIJING More than 1 million Chinese citizens, defying martial
law, took over sizable areas of Beijing Saturday and early today in a
widening, nonviolent revolt against the communist government that has
included calls for the resignation of China's top leaders.
Students and workers at many points throughout the city blocked
army soldiers attempting to enter the center of the city under a
decree issued Saturday imposing martial law on parts of Beijing.
In the first violence reported since a student pro-democracy
movement exploded into a popular, peaceful uprising last week, 10
students suffered serious injuries and more than 20 were hurt
slightly early Saturday when riot police attacked ...
