Before Saturday's running of the Belmont Stakes, there was
considerable amusement over a French horse named Le Voyageur, which
hoped to challenge the best American 3-year-olds in the final jewel
of the Triple Crown.
The line on Le Voyageur was not impressive - six races in
France, all minor and on turf, and only a single victory in a maiden
race. Few could be criticized for calling it folly to enter a horse
who had never raced on dirt.
But Le Voyageur surprised everybody by sprinting to the lead and
holding on gamely through the stretch, finishing a length behind
Sunday Silence for third place.
