ROCHESTER, N.Y. `I'll survive," Tom Kite said. "I promise you."
Having said that, he walked away from the worst day of his
career.
The headlines will say Curtis Strange won this U.S. Open and
became the first golfer since Ben Hogan to win two American
championships in a row.
But Strange didn't win it so much as Kite and Scott Simpson lost
it. Strange won by playing steadily and unspectacularly a final
round of par, while Simpson blew opportunities in a miserable round
of 5-over, and Kite, 8-over, suffered a day that must have evoked
sympathy in the heart of any hacker who watched.
Kite, leading money-winner on the PGA Tour this season, went
into the final round in excellent position ...
