Article: Costas hearing fewer cheers // TV sportscaster target of newfound criticism

It was nine years ago that Bob Costas stepped into a sports announcing post at NBC at the unheard age 27, just six years removed from his first major sportscasting job as play-by-play announcer for the now-defunct American Basketball Association's Spirits of St. Louis franchise.

And in those nine years, the fresh-faced Costas has had as good a ride as any sportscaster, drawing such plum assignments as late night host for NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, last year, host of the network's National Football League pre-game show, back-up play-by-play man for NBC's coverage of major league baseball as well as host of his own late-night talk show, "Later."
