Article: Surround sound now available to the masses

Amovie without surround sound is like a Fourth of July without fireworks. Nearly every movie that hits the theaters these days is encoded with sound that completely envelopes the viewer. When those theatrical films are converted to home video releases, the surround sound information is transferred onto the tape (or videodisc) as well.

The result is that music and sound effects emanate from all around the room, while the dialog and other main audio information seem to come directly from the TV screen.
