It has been 50 years now since Adolf Hitler plunged the World
into war. Even after half a century, Der Fuhrer is still regarded as
one of the great stinkers of all time. A few years ago, there was a
survey to find out who American school kids thought was the worst
person who ever lived. American school kids are not very good at
history, mind you, but they sure know who Hitler was. There were a
few scattered votes for Josef Stalin, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan
and Vlad the Impaler, as I remember, but Adolf Hitler won hands down
as the ultimate louse. We are a forgiving people, as a rule. We
certainly forgave Hirohito. But Hitler was another story altogether.
