SOFIA The tumult shaking Eastern Europe toppled another domino Friday when 78-year-old Bulgarian leader Todor Zhivkov followed other veterans of the Brezhnev era forced out of power by pressure for change.

Zhivkov's resignation as Eastern Europe's longest-serving Communist Party chief followed by less than a month the sudden departure of East Germany's Erich Honecker, 77.

Zhivkov, who in his 35 years in power led Bulgaria through the Cold War and made it an impenetrable part of the Iron Curtain, also resigned from the ruling Politburo, Bulgaria's BTA news agency reported. In addition, it said, Zhivkov asked to be relieved of his largely ceremonial post as state president.
